Chemical Name: ROSUVASTATIN (roe-SUE-vuh-stah-tin)
Common uses
This medicine is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor
(also known as a "statin") used with a proper diet
to help lower cholesterol and fat (triglyceride)
levels in your blood. Reducing cholesterol and
triglycerides helps prevent strokes and heart
attacks. This medicine may also be used to treat
other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Before using
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact
with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST
of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine
that you are taking. Use caution taking rosuvastatin
with medicines called fibrates such as gemfibrozil
or fenofibrate, high-doses of niacin, or
cyclosporine because serious side effects such as
muscle injury could occur. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF
YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are
taking antacids or "blood thinners" such as warfarin.
DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or
pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other
medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or
breast-feeding. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT
RECOMMENDED if you have active liver disease.
ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may
be needed if you have a history of heart disease,
liver disease, kidney disease, low thyroid levels,
low blood pressure, muscle problems or myopathy,
serious blood infection, serious infection,
uncontrolled seizures, recent major surgery, recent
trauma, recent major illness, alcohol use, or
allergies to other "statins" or cholesterol-lowering
medicines. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you
have any questions or concerns about taking this
medicine.
Directions
Follow the directions for using this medicine
provided by your doctor. This medicine is usually
taken once daily. Your dosage is based on your
medical condition, response to therapy, and use of
certain interacting medicines. Consult your doctor
or pharmacist for more details. This medicine may be
taken on an empty stomach or with food. DO NOT TAKE
ANTACIDS for at least 2 hours after taking this
medicine. IT IS IMPORTANT TO CONTINUE TAKING THIS
MEDICINE even if you feel well. Most people with
high cholesterol or triglycerides do not feel sick.
STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature in a
tightly-closed container, away from heat, moisture,
and light. This medicine should be taken regularly
to get the most benefit from it. Try to take this
medicine at the same time each day to help you
remember. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take
it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for
your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to
your regular dosing schedule. Do NOT take 2 doses at
once.
Cautions
IT MAY TAKE 2 to 4 WEEKS before the full benefits of
this medicine take effect. Follow the diet plan
provided by your doctor. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND
LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are using this
medicine. Laboratory and/or medical tests including
liver function tests and blood cholesterol levels
may be performed to monitor your progress or to
check for side effects. DAILY USE OF ALCOHOL may
increase your chance for serious side effects. Limit
alcoholic beverages. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW
MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter,
check with your doctor or pharmacist. FOR WOMEN: DO
NOT USE THIS MEDICINE if you are pregnant. IF YOU
SUSPECT THAT YOU COULD BE PREGNANT, contact your
doctor immediately. It is recommended that women of
childbearing age use effective birth control
measures while taking this medicine, since it may
cause fetal harm. Consult your doctor for more
information. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS
EXCRETED in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while
taking this medicine.
Possible side effects
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this
medicine include constipation, headache, or stomach
upset. If these continue or are bothersome, check
with your doctor. THIS MEDICINE MAY INFREQUENTLY
cause muscle damage that can rarely lead to a very
serious condition called rhabdomyolysis. STOP TAKING
THIS MEDCINE AND CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if
you develop muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness
(especially with fever or unusual tiredness).
CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience
chest pain, yellowing eyes and skin, dark urine,
severe nausea, or stomach pain. AN ALLERGIC REACTION
TO THIS MEDICINE is unlikely but seek immediate
medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an
allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling,
severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you
notice other effects not listed above, contact your
doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
